Why Medjool dates are the most celebrated

Why Medjool dates are the most celebrated

Similar to the many varieties of mangoes that grow in India, the date fruit too differs regionally and sub-regionally within the Thar. The terroir lends its own unique properties to the date palm fruit it grows, and Thar currently produces several varieties of ripe dates and also a couple of fresh ones. Here, though, we're focusing on one variety that has travelled particularly far beyond its desert origins: the Medjool.

When we first discovered and decided to support homegrown date cultivation during Covid, we faced the considerable challenge of debunking the myth that imported dates were superior to Indian ones. We chose Medjool as our starting point; a variety already familiar to global audiences, known for its generous size, soft flesh and naturally caramel-like sweetness. We based this decision on a broader shift we'd observed as conversations around conscious snacking and naturally sweet foods grew, dates began finding a place beyond traditional festive and religious occasions: as an ingredient, a snack and a thoughtful addition to the pantry. We were noticing a growing taste for gourmet food, a shift toward valuing what goes into the pantry rather than just what's cheapest, and a growing appreciation for how much fresher locally grown produce tastes all worked in our favour.

The response reassured us that there was an appetite for a date that felt both generous and distinctly Indian in provenance. Equally suited to thoughtful gifting and conscious snacking, Medjool dates are nutrient-dense, mineral-rich, and offer a sustained energy boost. They can be eaten just as they are, paired with cheese or nuts, folded into desserts, or presented as part of a considered gift.

From a variety once at risk of disappearing to a date now enjoyed around the world, the story of the Medjool is ultimately a story of movement across landscapes, cultures and tables. Explore our offerings here.
